Sometimes it can be helpful to categorize boxing skills. It allows one to compare categories and spot weaknesses, or to focus one’s attention on what skills exist in one aspect of boxing.

I first heard Teddy Atlas refer to the 3 dimensions of defense: head movement, hand placement and footwork. I myself have good head movement, decent hand placement, but terrible defensive footwork. Oddly enough, I’ve never come to this assessment until considering them in categories.
So now defensive footwork is my new hobby. What are the skills to learn? How do I develop them? Answering these questions is how I’m spending my training time.
