Sometimes it can be helpful to categorize boxing skills. It allows one to compare categories and spot weaknesses, or to focus one’s attention on what skills exist in one aspect of boxing.

I first heard Teddy Atlas refer to the 3 dimensions of defense: head movement, hand placement and footwork. I myself have good head movement, decent hand placement, but terrible defensive footwork. Oddly enough, I’ve never come to this assessment until considering them in categories.
So now defensive footwork is my new hobby. What are the skills to learn? How do I develop them? Answering these questions is how I’m spending my training time.

There is some benefit to couch potatoe-ism. Before having a kid I wasn’t a big TV person, but after the birth of my son I got cable TV and have watched many hundreds of hours of boxing in the past year. I didn’t just watch video, I studied it, I broke down body mechanics and techniques, and my boxing knowledge has increased 100X.
In the future I’m going to try and pass on things I picked up by linking to videos and referring to points to note. This should keep me motivated to continue my video study and help out some of my readers.
Besides the video study I added a few weapons to my arsenal. I worked on my left hook, body punching, sitting down in my punches and defensive footwork. I haven’t integrated these with my existing skills and style or sparred with these new skills, but I’ll keep you posted as I do this in the coming weeks.
